Consecutive interpretation appeared very long ago. It is the most common and popular type of services. It is suitable for negotiating a tete-a-tete, or for small conferences. Its advantage is that you do not need expensive equipment (special booths and headphones); the disadvantage is that the speaker has to make pauses in his speech to let the interpreter to interpret a fragment of the speech. The consecutive interpretation may be both unilateral and bilateral.

A bilateral translation calls for the ability to quickly switch from one language to another, as well as for the impeccable proficiency in both languages. It is common for a business meeting, that each party invites its own interpreter to minimize the risk of misunderstanding or of double interpretations.

The interpretation may also be classified by its type. For example, technical interpretation in practice is much more complicated than basic one, so it can be performed only by a highly skilled specialist. Every industry has its own specifics, and the interpreter must not only speak the language, but also be familiar with the specific terms. For example, it is quite often at scientific conferences, that technical interpreters are provided with a list of terms with the required translation to avoid incorrect interpretations.
